Founded in 2010, the John Alexander Project was inspired by a former journalist, they started a foundation in his name to launch up-and-coming international reporters abroad to underreported locations.
The Above the Fray program operates jointly with NPR. From 2010-2019, it sent 10 fellows abroad to Kiribati, China, Uganda, Cameroon, Réunion, Greenland, Georgia, Papua New Guinea, Mongolia and Japan.
The fellowship is not about finding the most experienced candidate; it is about cultivating the next generation of international journalists.
