FAQs

Grants for Journalists is a community-focused resource for the journalism funding ecosystem. It helps journalists find funding opportunities in the field. It’s not a company, a list of ads, nor a service. It was started (and is run) by one lowly veteran journalist who wanted to make hunting for opportunities easier and begin making the challenges of fundraising among independent journalists and news outlets a bit more communal.

I’m a big fan of collaboration, connection and paying it forward. I’m much less of a fan of gatekeeping and unnecessary competition. I know how hard fundraising and producing news can be and how even a little support can make a huge difference. It’s infrastructure built for the industry I love, will be maintained with care, and designed to serve journalists, educators, and funders equally. I’m just hoping you can come to the LinkedIn site or website and find your next opportunity or partner.

Newsroom leaders building sustainable models, independent journalists seeking strategic funding and foundations wanting their opportunities to reach the right applicants. Basically, journalists in all areas of the industry. Also, there’s information here for journalism educators, funders and potential funders. Stay tuned for what’s next.

Grants, fellowships, reporting funds, training programs and residencies specifically relevant to journalists, newsrooms, and journalism educators. If it puts money, time or resources toward journalism work, it likely belongs here.

I’m not a grant writer. I don’t have any money. I wish I had some to support more newsrooms in need. Besides a database of grants, the Grants for Journalists includes a bevy of resources that can get you started.

Do you need help writing grants? I’m thinking of starting a coaching program to help with grant applications and a few journalists have volunteered. Let me know what you think at monica@grantsforjournalists.com

I’m a journalist who saw a need and decided to do something about it. This project was born out of a fellowship with the Reynolds Journalism Institute from July 2025-March 2026.

If you need to know more about me, I’m a longtime journalist who’s worked for The Wall Street Journal, The Boston Globe, BridgeDetroit and Bridge Michigan, the Korea JoongAng Daily in Seoul, and National Geographic, among others. I like long walks on the hiking trails, journalism (obviously), voracious reading (also obvious), and traveling the world. I’ve won a few grants. I live with my dog Dudley. He’s a good boy!

I probably spend more time online than is healthy. The algorithm knows me intimately now, and recognizes that I’m interested in grants, fellowships and training opportunities for journalists.  I also follow a number of organizations on LinkedIn and subscribe to a lot of newsletters. So do my journalism friends.

Yes, completely. No paywalls, no subscriptions, no catch. If the site has helped you, you’re welcome to buy me a tea — but it’s never required.

Honestly? I’m from the United States and designed this for U.S. journalists. I didn’t anticipate that journalists from Kenya, India, Yemen, Bangladesh, and dozens of other countries would find their way here. I’m glad they did as it’s changed how I view this project. The global journalism funding ecosystem has real gaps, and I’m working to reflect that better. I add international opportunities as I find them, with more showing up regularly on the LinkedIn page, which has grown into a genuine global community that is updated most days.
